03 Sep Give your home a spring refresh
You don’t need to repaint the walls, replace the sofa or start again from scratch for a complete makeover. Sometimes, it’s the smaller details that are keeping a space from feeling quite as considered as you imagined.
The right vase. A better-scaled piece of artwork. A cushion that adds just enough texture. Moving a piece of furniture onto the rug rather than around it.
These things can seem insignificant on their own, but together, they change the way a room feels.
It’s All About Balance
One of the easiest ways to make a room feel more considered is to look at balance.
Is one side of the room visually heavier than the other? Are all your larger pieces pushed against the walls? Is there too much happening in one area, while another feels a little bare?
Before buying anything new, try moving what you already have.
A chair might work better slightly closer to the centre of the room. Artwork may feel more connected to the furniture if it is hung a little lower. A side table might give an empty corner a sense of purpose.
Pay Attention to Scale
You can have a beautiful dining table, beautiful chairs and a beautiful light and still feel that something isn’t quite working.
Often, it comes down to scale.
A small vase on a large dining table can feel lost. A tiny piece of artwork above a large sofa can feel disconnected. A rug that is too small can make an entire seating area feel fragmented.
Think about the relationship between the pieces in the room. Your accessories should have enough presence to hold their own, while still leaving the room space to breathe.
Let Your Home Breathe
We often feel that an empty wall needs something on it. That a windowsill needs styling. That every surface needs a vase, a candle or a collection of objects.
But negative space is part of good design too.
Leaving an area intentionally empty gives the eye somewhere to rest and allows the pieces you love to stand out.
A room feels finished when everything has its place.
Don’t Copy the Room, Translate It
We all save beautiful interiors.
Perhaps it’s a moody dining room with old-world character, or a warm, layered bedroom filled with natural textures. We recreate the colours, find similar furniture and bring home the accessories we love, only to wonder why our room doesn’t quite feel the same.
The answer is often that we are trying to copy the room rather than translate what we love about it.
Your home has its own architecture, light, proportions and personality.
If you love the warmth of a traditional interior but live in a modern space, bring in warmth through texture, vintage-inspired pieces, softer lighting and natural materials.
Take the feeling, rather than trying to recreate the photograph.
